August 16: Dickau – If Music Be the Food of Love, 2003

Jon CurtisSeason of the Day, SOTD - August

Today would be the day of Consort’s annual concert.  That means it’s the last day of this season.  And that means this is the last “Season of the Day” email!  But …

DON’T PANIC!

All of these emails are posted online!  If you missed any, or want to see one again, go to our website under Seasons -> 2020 where you will find them all.  But …

WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

When this project was started, Consort had about 40 videos posted online.  A background goal of the project was to get all of our media posted.  To date, we now have 170 videos and 227 audio recordings posted.  You can go to the Seasons menu above, where you can find playlists of entire concerts posted for most of our seasons.  Pick a year and listen to an entire concert of your choice.  And …

“COMPENDEMIC” TONIGHT!

A Zooming Virtual Concert featuring a Compendium of safe choral works for the Pandemic Season!

Tonight (August 16th) at 7:00pm we will be presenting a virtual concert.  Allan, and some surprise guests, will introduce pieces from our past.  You will, however, need to bring your own wine and cheese, but you won’t need to wait until after the concert to start your reception.

THE FUTURE

This has been a difficult year, but we hope these emails have given a bit of cheer to your summer.  Here are some things to look forward to:

  • Allan Petker Chorale – Tour of Scotland:  This has been tentatively rescheduled for June/July 2021.
  • Opus 27 with Dr. Jennaya Robison: We have already acquired the music, so we intend to do the same repertoire planned for this year.
  • Opus 28 with David Dickau: Today’s video is his “If Music Be the Food of Love.”
Persons of the Day: Those who have brought you these emails
These emails would not have been possible without all the wonderful concerts we have all performed and recorded over the past 26 years.  Even if you have not been named directly in any of the emails, every member of Consort is important!  We are all the creators of this magnificent collection of musical entrees.  That includes every one of our 126 singers, 90 orchestra players, 97 composers, and the 20-30 additional volunteers each season.

We close with a thank you to the team who has brought you these “Season of the Day” emails.  Jon Curtis has been the organizer, obsessive data junkie, and writer of the emails.  “It has been a joy and privilege to browse through all these wonderful recordings and bring this shared history back to life.”

Jon has been assisted by Lily O’Brien and MC Winkler who have rigorously reviewed and edited every single email.  We also want to thank Will Toft, who has copied every email to Consort’s Facebook and Instagram accounts!

There have also been a number of people who have contributed additional CDs, DVDs, and photos, as well as answered many questions, filling in missing data: Allan Petker, Bob Friestad, Kimberly Ayers, David Irvine, Ruthann Lovetang, David Hanchette, Kevin Memley, Sanford Dole, Alexandra Amati, and Norm Proctor.

And now we close the 2020 “Season of Days” with this beautiful thought, and music, from David Dickau, “If Music be the Food of Love.”

If music be the food of love, sing on till I am filled with joy;
For then my listening soul you move to pleasures that can never cloy.
Your eyes, your mien, your tongue declare that you are music everywhere.
Pleasures invade both eye and ear, so fierce the transports are, they wound,
And all my senses feasted are.
Tho’ yet the treat is only sound, sure I must perish by your charms,
Unless you save me in your arms.
If music be the food of love, sing on.
