If music be the food of love, sing on till I am filled with joy; For then my listening soul you move to pleasures that can never cloy. Your eyes, your mien, your tongue declare that you are music everywhere. Pleasures invade both eye and ear, so fierce the transports are, they wound, and all my senses feasted are; Tho’ yet the treat is only sound, sure I must perish by your charms, unless you save me in your arms. David Dickau received his bachelor and doctoral degrees from USC and his Master’s from Northwestern in Chicago. He is the professor and Choral Chair at Mankato State University in Minnesota. He is married to Allan Petker’s sister (an excellent decision!).

Guy Forbes is the Associate Conductor of Choirs and Chair of Music Education at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Forbes received a Master of Music in conducting from Florida State University and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida.
I Am In Need of Music (David L. Brunner, 1953-)

I am in need of music that would flow over my fretful feeling fingertips, over my bitter-tainted, trembling lips, with melody, deep, clear, and liquid-slow. Oh, for the healing swaying, old and low, of some song, sung to rest the tired dead, a song to fall like water on my head, and over quivering limbs, dream flushed to glow! There is a magic made by melody: a spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool heart, that sinks through fading colors deep to the subaqueous stillness of the sea, and floats forever in a moon-green pool, held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep.
David Brunner is a composer and conductor, currently the professor of music at the University of Central Florida, Orlando.

American composer, Daniel Gawthrop, composes music for choral organizations and symphonies and is one of the most frequently commissioned choral writers in the United States. Poet Jane Griner is his wife.

This remarkable and brilliant mass written in 1796 carries three names, the first being its key signature. The second is the dedicatory name: Bernard of Offida. He was a seventeenth century Capuchin monk who had been beatified just a year earlier. The Saint’s day was September 11, which was also the name day for the benefactor’s wife, Princess Marie Esterházy, who commissioned the work. The third is its most common, a nickname, “Heiligmesse,” which refers to a well-known German hymn tune “Heilig, Heilig” (Holy, Holy) which is concealed cleverly in the Sanctus.
Scarborough Fair (Arr. Fred Bock, 1939-1998)

Are you goin’ to Scarborough Fair? Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme; remember me to one who lives there, for (s)he once was a true love of mine.
A prolific composer and arranger, Fred Bock was also a renowned organist in church and recording studio venues. His music publishing endeavors were legendary, including numerous hymnals. “Scarborough Fair” was the very first piece he published to launch his own firm, Gentry Publications. Permission was granted to rearrange Fred’s classic for a cappella voices.

René Clausen is the conductor of the Concordia Choir of Concordia College in Minnesota. His compositions are performed the world over. Robert Burns was a Scot who was born into poverty. He became one of the greatest poets, satirists and song writers of his day.
Quando Corpus Morietur (Gioacchino Rossini, 1792-1868)

Rossini was a very successful composer for his day, first in Italy, then in Paris. He is best known for his operas, especially his final one, “William Tell.”

Born in Argentina, Ariel Quintana graduated from the Universidad Adventista del Plata, later earning a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires. Currently he is the conductor of the Cathedral Choir at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood and is in the doctoral program in choral conducting at USC. He was recently appointed assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
The Battle of Jericho (Arr. Moses Hogan, 1957-2003)

Talk about your kings of Gideon, talk about your men of Saul, but none like good old Joshua at the Battle of Jericho. That mornin’ Joshua fit the Battle, the Battle of Jericho…Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho and the walls come tumbalin’ down. Right up to the walls of Jericho, he marched with spear in hand. “Go blow that ramhorn!” Joshua cried, ‘cause the battle am in my hand. God, almighty, then the lamb, ram, sheep horns begin to blow and the trumpet begins to sound. Joshua commanded the the children to shout! And the walls come a tumbalin’ down.
Until his untimely death in 2003, Moses Hogan was one of the most celebrated contemporary directors and arrangers of spirituals. In his short life, he created dozens of original arrangements of classic spirituals, and formed several choirs that performed them with new vitality.
Consort Chorale consists of selected choral singers primarily from the San Francisco Bay Area who are dedicated to the choral art form. Every summer, for the past fourteen years, the group has auditioned in May, gathered for almost-weekly rehearsals and then an intensive week of nightly rehearsals, culminating in a crowd-pleasing concert. The unique “intensive” format comes with certain limitations, but provides an opportunity for singers to share in their love of choral music through the ages. We are indebted to the artistic rehearsal contributions of David Irvine, Martha Wall and Ruth E. Wells, whose assistance in preparation is immeasurable.
Allan Robert Petker, founder-director of Consort Chorale, is an internationally known choral conductor, clinician and prolific composer with over 250 published works. He is the Director of Publications for the Fred Bock Music Companies, President of Pavane Publishing and serves as U.S. representative for several distinguished English publishing firms. He is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Santa Clarita Master Chorale and the Director of Music at the First Presbyterian Church in San Pedro.
